STEPS TO BRUSHING YOUR PET’S TEETH
- Use only a toothbrush and toothpaste made specifically for your pet. These can be purchased at either your veterinary hospital or any pet store. Human toothpaste contains agents that are toxic and irritant when ingested.
- Begin your at home dental care as early in your pet’s life as possible. But please note that it is never too late. So no matter what age your pet is, please continue reading!
- Your pet’s comfort is very important. The more comfortable your pet is, the easier it will be to brush it’s teeth. Try to approach your pet from the side instead of the front. This may make you seem less intimidating.
- For small dogs and cats, try placing them on your lap and cuddle them throughout the cleaning process. This will help them feel more comfortable and at ease.
- Begin with just a few teeth at a time. This helps your pet ease into the routine. Gradually increase the amount of teeth cleaned each time until all teeth can be cleaned in one session.
- When brushing is complete, offer your pet a treat as a reward for its behavior.
- Try to include teeth brushing as part of a daily routine. For example, brush your pet’s teeth after dinner or before a walk.
- Teeth should be cleaned about every other day and a veterinarian should administer an oral examine at least once a year. Your veterinarian will notify you if they believe that a professional cleaning should be done at their hospital. A professional cleaning is when your pet is sedated and its teeth are scaled and polished by the veterinarian. This is a similar procedure that you have done with your dental hygienist.
